Ian Thomson

Ian joined Spearing Waite LLP in May 2016 as the firm’s first Partner specialising solely in Commercial work.

He joins from Geldards, where he was a partner in the Commercial team. Prior to that Ian had spent almost 20 years in the in-house sector, initially with British Coal before longer spells with Nestlé and Boots, and finally the former Focus Wickes retail group as Head of Legal. He trained as a solicitor in his home city of Hull after graduating in Law from Cambridge.

An accomplished and versatile practitioner, Ian’s experience covers all kinds of commercial contracts as well as many areas of trading and business law, including the buying and selling of goods and services; agency, franchising and distributorship arrangements; outsourcing; software licensing, maintenance support and development; consumer credit and financial services regulation; collaboration and joint ventures; advertising and sales promotion; sponsorship; data protection and competition law.

Through his work Ian has acquired broad and in-depth knowledge of many sectors of industry and commerce, especially retail, pharmaceuticals and healthcare, food and drink, sport and entertainment, manufacturing, engineering, energy (including renewables), transport (heavy and light rail, automotive and aviation), IT and computing and financial services. Much of his work has had an international element.

Ian has been recommended in the 2011, 2013, 2014 and 2015 editions of the Legal 500.
