Training contracts

Spearing Waite LLP is one of the largest law firms in Leicester, having experienced rapid growth since the merger of Spearing & Co and Parsons Waite in 1993. We’re a predominantly commercial firm specialising in the following areas:

  • Real Estate
  • Corporate Transactions
  • Company Law
  • Intellectual Property
  • Wills and Probate
  • Personal Injury
  • Property Development
  • Commercial Litigation
  • Employment
  • Residential Conveyancing
  • Trusts
  • Family Law

We offer up to four training contracts per year, normally commencing in August and we are regularly praised for the quality of the training we offer our trainee solicitors. As well as working in up to four different departments within the firm, trainee solicitors can expect to handle a diverse case load and have substantial client contact. We believe our trainee solicitors have a far more ‘hands on’ experience than at other firms which allows the transition into qualification to be as seamless as possible. As we continue to expand there’s also every opportunity for trainee solicitors to qualify into the firm and then to progress in their chosen areas. Indeed, a number of our trainee solicitors have rapidly progressed to become partners. For the trainee solicitor with ambition and a hard working attitude Spearing Waite LLP is the perfect choice.

In the early part of each year we hold an Assessment Day for which up to 30 candidates are selected. The Day takes place in our offices on Pocklingtons Walk and puts candidates through a range of activities including debates and presentations. The feedback received from the Day has always been overwhelmingly positive with many candidates commenting that they were allowed to express themselves in a far more creative manner than in formal interviews or similar such days at other firms. Following the Day, approximately 6 candidates are short-listed for interviews after which training contracts for a period of 2 years will be offered to the successful candidates. Each Day considers candidates for trainee places to start in August the following year. Applications are encouraged from both final year degree students and those candidates who may be further advanced in their studies. Ideally CVs with covering letters should be submitted before 31 January for a training contract the following year.

Spearing Waite LLP generates great loyalty amongst its clients and staff as a result of high quality service and the friendly and informal atmosphere that pervades the office. As one of the few commercial firms in Leicester that is not controlled by a head office based outside the city, our partners and staff are very much in control of their own destiny and an ambitious trainee solicitor will find there are no limits to how far he or she can progress.

Cara Ward
Trainee solicitor

“Looking back over the last 18 months of my training contract with Spearing Waite, I can see that my confidence has improved significantly and I’ve expanded on and developed my legal skills with the experience I’ve gained.

My current seat in the commercial department gives me exposure to high quality work with the right balance of responsibility and supervision. The firm has a great social side and I’ve met some fantastic people here.

I’ve enjoyed being a part of Spearing Waite’s expansion and I’m excited to see what the future holds for the firm!”

Tanya Dobson
Paralegal (Trainee solicitor from August 2018)

I started my role as a Paralegal at Spearing Waite LLP in the Corporate department in March 2016, having previously worked as a legal secretary in the same department since July 2013, and I immediately felt like a valued member of the team.

My workload includes assisting on various large corporate transactions and I am constantly being challenged outside of my comfort zone.

Everyone at Spearing Waite is very approachable and the office is a very friendly atmosphere to work in.

Outside of work, members of staff are also encouraged to get involved with the firm’s regular charity / social events. For example, in May 2016, 15 members of staff (ranging from Partner level to admin support staff) took part in the Midlands half Tough Mudder, raising nearly £600 for MacMillan).

I am fortunate enough to have the opportunity to work for a firm which invests in the development of its staff and am very excited about starting my training contract in August 2018.”
