Collaborative Law

The Collaborative Family Law process is a relatively new way of resolving issues in a relationship breakdown. Each party appoints their own solicitor who must be a specifically trained Collaborative Lawyer. Our highly experienced and specialist divorce and family team is collaboratively trained.

You and your partner are individually advised and you are expected to work together at joint meetings to try to resolve all issues in the best possible way. There is full disclosure of financial circumstances and instead of negotiations taking place in correspondence, all discussions take place around a table with you, your partner and lawyers being present in open discussions. It is also possible for other independent experts to attend the meeting such as a barrister or financial advisor. Advice can be given to both parties around the table during the process or clients can take individual advice. The procedure is intended to be amicable and client-centred.

At the start of the process you, your partner and your collaborative lawyers are expected to sign an agreement that will disqualify your lawyers from representing you in court if the process breaks down. This means that they are absolutely committed, as you are, to finding the best solution by agreement, rather than through conflict.
